Lundellska Upper Secondary School

Established in 1892, Lundellska School in Uppsala today operates within historic buildings on a former military site. The campus has now been rejuvenated, blending historical elements with a modern flair.

A historic environment with a new twist

At the former regiment area of Polacksbacken, the barracks and courtyards have been transformed into a bespoke educational setting for the students and staff of Lundellska School. While the premises have now been repurposed, their historical essence continues to resonate.

Property owner Hemsö has restored the site with care, managing to preserve historical integrity alongside modernity. A major focus of the project has been to craft flexible and contemporary study spaces within these venerable walls, says Anki Andersson from PE Teknik & Arkitektur.

The high ceilings and large windows allow for generous natural light, making wooden furniture and light finishes common features.

“In our design concept, we aimed for bringing nature indoors. Green, the hallmark colour of Lundellska School, is prominently showcased in the interiors. It also features plenty of furnishings, such as chairs and benches, crafted from wood in earthy colours and tones, which contribute to a wholesome aesthetic”, says Anki Andersson.

Circular thinking

Circular thinking was a high priority during the renovation and in the interior design process. To extend the life span of the furniture, Input Interior has introduced solutions to minimise waste.

Many of the furniture pieces at the school are new, high-quality items that are designed to last over time. Embracing this circular approach is crucial for their future refurbishment and renovation,” comments Helena Nathorst, Account Manager at Input Interior, who supplied and installed the furnishing.

With deep knowledge in the field, Input Interior, in collaboration with PE Teknik & Arkitektur and the Uppsala Municipality, ensured the seamless execution of the project stages.

“The collaboration has worked very well. Having an open dialogue with all stakeholders allowed us to leverage our expertise in selecting the right products. Essentially, it's about sustainable interiors in every respect,” adds Helena Nathorst.

Challenges and opportunities

Anki Andersson believes that creating a modern school within a historical setting posed a challenge – but an enjoyable one, and she is satisfied with the outcome.

“It has been incredibly exciting to work on this project. The premises are remarkably beautiful, and we take pride in having created a welcoming environment full ofopportunities for the school’s students and staff,” concludes Anki Andersson.
